Fall 2020 One Room Challenge - Week 5: Redesigned Finds

It’s nearly mid November here in Orillia, Ontario, Canada and while most of the leaves have already fallen, mother nature gifted us an amazing week of weather so we could make some major progress on our outdoor dining/living area. Week 5 of our Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge was the week where everything moved along so much faster. We had A LOT of help this week from our family as my brother Paul of Brancon installed the fence and my brother-in-law Dave of Ground Control led the way with our patio. Grant worked ahead on some of our DIY projects including an outdoor sideboard made from an old weathered picnic table and my daughter Lily was an amazing help with the patio, bringing bricks as fast as I could lay them. Together we were able to:

  • finish the fence

  • paint the shed

  • start a couple of small DIY projects

  • and finished 2/3 of the brick patio

Redesigned Finds

For those of you who have followed this challenge throughout Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 , Week 4 and on Instagram, you already know that Reducing, Reusing and Recycling - “Redesign” - is at the heart of everything I do. I always try to incorporate vintage and antique elements and transform them to achieve a look that is curated over time. Buying well made and hand crafted furniture and pieces is very important to me and this project was no exception.

I’m a little hesitant to share too much prior to the final reveal in a couple of weeks but you’ll see a few close-up sneak peeks below of several antique and vintage items as well as items purchased secondhand including:

  • 2 wood patio sets from Kijiji (1 for every day use and 1 for extra seating when we’re able to safely have family and friends over again)

  • a marble bistro table from Antiques on 11

  • 2 glazed clay planters from Kijiji

  • an iron firepit from Kijiji

  • bricks for the patio from our family (leftover from Dave’s driveway install)

  • a teak side table from Kijiji

  • an old picnic table with great patina that Grant is building into a potting bench/sideboard

We have so much to do in the next couple of weeks before final reveals are due on November 29th and more rain coming up in a couple of days. Fingers crossed that we’ll be able to finish and shoot the space in time. Many featured and guest participants in the One Room Challenge will finish up prior to us so please take a look at their spaces. I’ll also share plenty of behind the scenes details via Insta posts and stories leading up to the final push.
