Spring 2020 One Room Challenge - Week 7: Redesigned Finds
/After several late nights of painting, sewing and styling this week I’m so happy to say that WE ARE DONE! Week 7 was the week where everything came together and there’s just one more week to go in our Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge until you’ll see all the details beautifully shot by Rowell Photography.
Redesigned Finds
For those of you who have followed this challenge throughout Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 , Week 4, Weeks 5 & 6 and on Instagram, you already know that Reducing, Reusing and Recycling - “Redesign” - is at the heart of everything I do. I always try to incorporate vintage and antique elements and transform them to achieve a look that is curated over time. Buying well made and hand crafted furniture and pieces is very important to me and this project was no exception.
I’m a little hesitant to share too much prior to next week but you’ll see a few close-up sneak peeks below of several antique and vintage items as well as items purchased secondhand including:
upper cabinets used as a run of lowers from Kijiji
a granite sink and Kingston Brass wall mounted faucet from Kijiji
an antique door with frosted glass window from Kijiji
brass knobs from our Orillia Habitat for Humanity Restore
a step stool and vintage and antique accessories from Antiques on 11
Cabinetry
After searching for “the right ones” for a few weeks we found a great set of kitchen cabinets on Kijiji for only $400, enough for a long run of uppers as lowers for storage in the laundry room, a wide cabinet for the laundry room sink and lowers to make a kitchen island (a project for this summer).
After sanding, priming and painting the cabinet doors Benjamin Moore’s “Black Bean Soup”, Grant installed them as well as the butcher block countertops. Our Habitat for Humanity Restore brass knobs which were about .50 cents each complete the look.
Granite Sink & Brass Faucet
We found a beauty of a black granite sink on Kijiji for only $50 but unfortunately damaged one of the corners unloading it when we brought it home. We could have glued it back together but instead decided to pivot our plans and under mount it instead. I actually really love it this way and can’t imagine it any other way now. Our Kingston Brass wall mounted faucet was another steal of a deal from Kijiji and was brand new in the box for only $50!
For those following my Insta stories you know that my brother and I debated over having a butcher block backsplash (original plan) or no backsplash once we saw everything together in the space. Grant, always easy going, was happy with both options so in the end I decided that there was just too much wood with the backsplash. We kept it but decided not to install it this time.
Antique Door
We found this $175 door on Kijiji like the other finds and knew it would be perfect for the space. We wanted a door with a window in it to let the light into the Jam Room from the laundry room and bathroom windows. We needed to cut a few inches off the bottom to fit the space but other than that didn’t do a lot to it. Grant loved the worn look so we left it as-is.
Final Touches
I always add a few antique and vintage touches to finish my rooms but Grant is also an antique lover so I added a few extras for our laundry room. Grant opened up Antiques on 11 after hours one night for some private shopping and I was able to pick up some pretty amazing finds including:
rug beaters
dust pans
original paintings
clothes pins
amber glass Javex bottles
Here are a few sneak peeks below of how they look in our finished laundry room …
I can’t wait to show you the final space next Thursday but until then please take a look at other featured and guest participants in the One Room Challenge. I’ll also share plenty of behind the scenes details via Insta posts and stories leading up to next week
